I've read a lot about how to get whiter nails... even bought some solution to help make them whiter... Spent a lot of money for nothing! This works even better than the stuff in the stores!
Lightly buff the top of your nails.
Put about 1/2 cup of HOT water in a bowl.
Add 4 tablespoons of baking soda and stir until mostly dissolved.
Add 2 tablespoons of peroxide.
Soak nails in the solution for about a minute
(You can soak them longer if you have the patience, I don't! It works quickly though.)
*The baking soda will not dissolve fully, you can use the excess to gently exfoliate your nails while they are submerged in the solution.
Repeat until your desired whiteness.
Finish it off with a clear top coat :)
The solution can be kept for 24 hours... I wouldn't keep it any longer than that.
*UPDATE:
-This only works on natural nails!
-The products also work to whiten teeth.
I think this is a really cool idea.. thanks for sharing - I can't wait to try it!!
ReplyDeleteWould this weaken your nails though?
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't weaken mine, Maybe for the little while right after, like taking a hot bath, but the strength is back to normal afterwards :)
ReplyDeletei just did this and it was AWESOME.
ReplyDeletedo you use hydrogen peroxide solution? or peroxide powder?
ReplyDeleteI use the hydrogen peroxide solution!
DeleteBe careful using baking soda on your teeth as it can damage the enamel
ReplyDeleteOh wow thanks for the tip!! What about the toothpastes that contain baking soda? Are they damaging as well?
DeleteIt's ok to use once in a while but not for everyday use. Also you can just use diluted peroxide for whitening you teeth. Used as a mouthwash.
Deleteusing peroxide in your mouth is a really bad idea as it promotes gum deterioration and gum receding.
DeleteI'm a Dental Hygienist---baking soda does not damage the enamel....it's a great alternative to the chemical-filled toothpastes that are on the market.
DeleteYa, I think it's fine. I used to use straight baking soda powder on my teeth. Now I use the Arm & Hammer baking soda tooth paste. Works great!
DeleteJess-it is fine to use baking soda. no problems as stated above! Do not use peroxide repeatedly though
DeleteUsing baking soda on your teeth will not damage the enamel. *rolls eyes*
ReplyDeleteYeah, that's what I was thinking... may be more dangerous to your gums than your teeth...
DeleteIt can damage your teeth....because the baking soda is very abrasive and will over time wear away your enamel...which will not grow back. So just use maybe once a month. The baking soda tooth paste is fine.
Deleteusing baking soda CAN damage your enamel and using peroxide to much can be harmful to your soft tissue in your mouth as well.
DeleteRight, I can understand that! Don't use it as a daily routine
DeleteIt can do damage to teeth if you are rubbing soda on your teeth like they are a sink or something! I assure you if you are using it in a responsible manner it is actually good for your mouth to help acid levels (bacteria bi-product that create cavities) as well as acidic food/drinks.. do becareful...and talk to your dental professional PLEASE! Not everyone should try this! Please be responsible, you want to keep your mouth healthy ...that is most important ladies!!!
Deletekt..RDH ;)
Great advice :) Thank you!
DeleteI have used baking soda all my life and I have white teeth and my enamel is not gone! lol It's okay to use. I actually think toothpaste is worse than b.s. because of the chemicals. I'm a scary cat when peroxide is concern b/c im afraid to swallow it. but i hear that's good too. baking soda also keeps your mouth fresh, longer.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I'm pretty convinced that the baking soda is safe! I'm a little worried about the peroxide, but at the same time, I think it's fine in moderation.
DeleteBaking Soda, over time, will wear down the enamel. It is a good teeth whitener every now and then, but not often.
DeleteI have used peroxide and soda pasted for ever and my dentist thinks it is better than toothpaste- especially for my gums. My teeth are not as white as they were when I used trays etc, but they are whiter than when I did not use it.
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure from what I'm reading that it's safe for both teeth and nails.
ReplyDeletethis really works!!
ReplyDeleteYou shouldn't use the peroxide as a daily mouthwash because it kills the good bacteria in your mouth. Using a little mixed with baking soda to brush your teeth is fine and is a great whitener, also!
ReplyDeleteI'm going to try this for my nails! Thank you! :)
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome!! Let me know if it works for you :D
DeleteHow do you use it on your teeth?
ReplyDeleteRinse with peroxide cut with water… then mix the baking soda with your toothpaste… it works very well!
DeleteJust tried this and loved the results! Thank you for this tip!
ReplyDeleteGreat :)
DeleteMy father used nothing but baking soda to brush his teeth as a child and passed away with no cavities!!!!
ReplyDeleteI use this same type of mixture to clean my Rings & jewelry (with a small toothbrush)...makes em sparkle like new :)
ReplyDeleteOh wow! I never thought of using that!
DeleteI'll have to try it :)
I use a toothbrush and a little toothpaste on my gems and metals (gold and silver etc) in jewelry and it also makes then shine like new! My mom taught me this years ago and it works as well as diamond cleaners, etc. Just be careful with the more porous gemstones like opal and coral etc. I use a cleanser gentle enough for them. Lots of great ideas, ladies and gents!!!
Deletemy hand twin!
ReplyDeleteWhen you say "Lightly file the top of your nails to get the stains off", do you mean file the surface of your nails? Or the tip? Sorry if I'm being a dodo head here...just not sure what you mean. :)
ReplyDeleteThe surface :) lol Sorry should have been more clear!
DeleteThanks!
DeleteI just tried this on my nails and they look bright and feel so smooth! And I put my stud earrings and wedding rings in the mixture when I was done (gently scrubbed with the baby toothbrush I keep for jewelry)and they look great too- just rinse well with warm water afterwards. Thanks for the tip!!
ReplyDeleteOhhh my goodness I just did this now and I've never seen my nails this white before :), I also cleaned my wedding rings with it and they look brand new and sparkly. Thank you for this post
ReplyDeleteCan i do this without the peroxide?? I dont know if I can get it in the Netherlands!! :(
ReplyDeletenot sure what i did wrong but they look the same... um maybe try again later...
ReplyDeleteDoes this solution work on toe nails? Mine are stained due to always using dark colored nail polish and not removing it.
ReplyDeleteit sure does :)
DeleteDoes this solution work on toe nails? Mine are stained due to always using dark colored nail polish and not removing it.
ReplyDeleteWhen cleaning your jewelry with baking soda put foil in a bowl add a little baking soda powder add jewelry and add boiling hot water watch it bubble sit for a minute then rinse well, they will look brand new again!
ReplyDeleteI just tried the hot water, peroxide, and baking soda, solution, it works wonderfully. I am a Chef and we don't wear a lot of nail polish. My nails are always shaped nicely but they were always stained. Now they look lovely. Hip-Hip Hooray.
ReplyDeleteWhat sort of peroxide do I use for the teeth thing?.. Is it the same as the hair dying one??
ReplyDeleteHi, I'm a Cosmetologist and FYI you should never file the top of your nail it damages the natural ridges of your nails making them become weak and split and or peel eventually leading to breakage and infection along the sides of the nail. just so you know!
ReplyDeleteThey file the surface of my nails every single time I get a manicure.
DeleteThanks so much for this great news! After over 20+ years of having artificial nails + gel nails, I am now going natural!! I can hardly wait to try this tomorrow when I take off nail polish!! Again, great news!!
DeleteGreat blog! Is your theme custom made or did you download it
ReplyDeletefrom somewhere? A theme like yours with a few simple adjustements would really make my
blog stand out. Please let me know where you got your design.
Bless you
Here is my web page - los angeles nails
It is a custom design based on Blogger's simple template. I tweaked the codes a bit to make it more personalized!
DeleteRedbud Designs is a great blog designer.
DeleteGreat article. I'm gonna have to try that on my nails.
ReplyDeleteBTW I think it would make more sense to *buff* the top of your nails, not file them.
As for using on the teeth... I would tend to think you would need to make sure you are using *food grade* hydrogen peroxide.
This totally worked! I wear a lot of red nail polish and always get this gross dingy orange discoloration to my nails afterwards! The supplies cost me probably 3$ total, and that would cover me for nails and teeth whitening for a long while!
ReplyDeletePlus.. I am a smoker. bah I know really bad habbit and I am battling it, this also took any yellowing off my fingers. (I am an avid hand-washer since I do smoke but you still can see a slight change.) Awesome Thank you very much!
I accidentally stained my toe nails pink from song bad nailpolish. And ive tried using this recipe to whiten them. Its only working on the whute tips of my nails and not the whole nail.
ReplyDeleteYou can soak your nails in denture cleaner it will work to and easier on your nails
ReplyDeleteDoes baking powder work for this also?
ReplyDeleteI wonder if this would work on my yellow-ish toe nails? Has anyone tried it?
ReplyDeleteJust a note about baking soda and teeth enamel: I have always taken very good care of my teeth. I would floss, brush, and use mouthwash twice a day. When I discovered baking soda, I was delighted at how much whiter it made my teeth. I used it 1-3 times/week for about two years. Since then, I have had seven cavities, one that became severely infected and required a root canal. I do not drink soda or eat many sugary foods, and I did not change anything else about my mouth care routine. I woult NOT recommend using baking soda on your teeth.
ReplyDeleteJanee, I used to use the baking soda with peroxide a few times a month on my teeth, when I was a teenager. There's many other ways to brighten our smiles and I thank you for brightening mine for the mixture being used on my nails :)
ReplyDeletebaking soda will not damage your enamel, however it can be abrasive to your gums. so it could cause gum recession. be careful when using it straight out of the box. toothpaste is fine. -dental assistant going into hygiene school:)
