I'm posting this for a family in need. I saw the story on Facebook and offered to do a post for them. Please take a moment to read their story and help in any way you can!
On March 17 2011, Jamie and Buddy Walker were blessed with a beautiful little boy. His name would be David Buddy. This would make their 5th son. They were expecting a healthy boy without any complications, having had three ultrasounds, all being great.
They had no idea when the Dr showed them their little boy for the first time that they would see two tiny, twisted little feet. As soon as she saw his feet she began to cry. The Dr came to her side and told her it would be okay. David appeared to have clubfeet.
That day everyone who came to the hospital wanted to see his feet. She couldn't stop looking at them herself. Several doctors came in and looked at his feet, all telling her "its going to be fine."
Their family doctor gave them lots of papers on clubfoot.
Because they had never heard of clubfoot, or known anyone with it, they were not really sure what to do, or where to even begin...
They went to the specialist that their family doctor referred them to. David was 8 days old when he was cast for the first time. " I remember crying because I couldn't snuggle him. David would scream at night for hours. His legs and feet would cramp, and all I knew how to do was hold him" Jamie said.
After nine months of seeing our local clubfoot Doctor she began to worry. David had relapsed twice. He had been placed in braces twice and still his feet were still turned in so far that she could barely fit his feet into the boots.
She joined a facebook page for clubfoot, and posted pictures of David and concerns that they had. The other parents agreed, David's feet didn't look right. She began to look for a second opinion. She heard that Dr Dobbs was one of the best clubfoot Doctors in America, so she sent him pictures and and told him David's story..
Dr Dobbs was wonderful he got back to her the very next day. He told her that just by looking at the pictures, it looked like the local Doctor was doing it wrong. [Dr Dobbs was trained by Dr Ponseti himself.] (The Dr who came up with the treatment for clubfoot)
David had already been through so much, they really wanted to take him somewhere that would fix his feet. They wanted David to be able to run and play with his big brothers.
So they took David to Dr. Dobbs. It is a 500 mile trip from their home in Dutton, Alabama to St. Louis, Missouri. They tried to find help with gas, etc.. but nobody would help. The insurance would'nt pay because they were going out of state, and the local Shriners wouldn't help us because they were going to a hospital out of that jurisdiction. They asked the St. Louis Shriners to help and they told us no because we lived out of their jurisdiction. So they attempted it alone.
Dr. Dobbs said David's feet were cast wrong, and he was glad they had not let the local doctor perform the needed surgery.
Dr. Dobbs had to start treatment from square one. It took him 6 cast and a surgery to get David corrected. They had to buy his braces at 649.00 (That was 5 months ago.) David had a lot of trouble keeping the braces on. He hated them, and would cry and beat them until they came off. David relapsed four times, because he has very tight tendons on the sides of his feet that would not seem to cooperate.
They were going to try one more time. After a total of 19 sets of casts, David has lost the musle tone in his legs. Dr. Dobbs told them that if they couldn't keep the braces on this time, they would have to stop treatment. David would have to learn to walk on the tops of his feet, and when he turned 5-6 years old he would need to undergo a major reconstructive surgery that would take between 7-8 hours to complete.
They worked extra hard over the last seven weeks to keep the braces on, and to stretch, stretch, stretch! He has had blisters and bruises galore, but they got great news Wednesday, his feet have not relapsed! The Dr said the only problem now, is that he still is not walking. The tendons on the sides of his feet are still tight, and are causing his feet to continuously curl. They hope he will start walking soon and the weight from it will stretch those tendons on out.
January of this year they had to buy his 3rd pair of braces for $640.00. Those brace's have been heated up and stretched out as far as they can be let out, and now David needs a new pair of braces.
The cost of the braces is $700.00. Jamie and Buddy simply do not have the money. They have exhausted all avenues and they need help! The doctor is willing to reuse some of the metal rods from the last set of braces, bringing the cost down to $540.00. Please help, in any way that you can! Even $1.00, brings us that much closer to David having a normal childhood.
Jamie has a business, and would like to work for the money. Her facebook page is called The Mustard Seed. You can either order from her to help with the cost, or make a donation directly to her paypal account at jamies4boys@yahoo.com
